Where every path opens up a new perspective
Hiking holidays in the Rheingau – between woodland and sweeping views
27 July 2026

When hiking in the Rheingau, the landscape reveals itself step by step. Around a bend in the path, the view over the Rhine opens up. A narrow track leads through an ancient beech forest. A few kilometres further on, you’ll find vineyards that have shaped the region’s landscape for centuries. Dotted amongst them are castles, monasteries and small wine-growing villages that seem as though time has passed a little more slowly there.
It is precisely this diversity that makes a walking holiday in the Rheingau so special. The region combines nature and culture in a way that has become rare. Challenging high-altitude trails meet leisurely wine walks. Forest paths give way to vantage points. And often, the nearest vineyard is just a few minutes’ walk away.
Those who explore the Rheingau on foot experience more than just a landscape. They discover a region that reveals itself a little more with every kilometre. And one that invites you to explore it in ways that are always fresh and new.

Ansbachweg and Elsterbachweg – a leisurely walk for the whole family
The two circular walks near Stephanshausen are ideal for shorter hikes. At around six kilometres in length, they are easily manageable even for families.

Hiking and indulgence – what makes the Rheingau so special
Many hiking regions offer beautiful trails. The Rheingau, however, also offers a unique culture of indulgence.
After a walk through the vineyards, you’ll often find the next winery right by the side of the path. Towns such as Kiedrich, Johannisberg and Eltville combine regional cuisine with centuries-old wine-growing traditions. Added to this are cultural sites such as Eberbach Abbey, Johannisberg Castle and the Scharfenstein ruins, which enrich many walks.
The result is a region where exercise and enjoyment naturally go hand in hand. A walking holiday in the Rheingau rarely ends with the last kilometre – often, that’s when the second half of the day really begins.
WALD.WEIT as a starting point for hikes in the Rheingau
Anyone spending several days in the region is looking for more than just accommodation. They are seeking a place where the day’s experiences can be reflected upon.
The WALD.WEIT Rheingau Hotel & Retreat is situated above Kiedrich, right on the edge of the Hahnwald. From here, numerous walking trails are within easy reach, including the Rheinsteig. At the same time, nature begins right on your doorstep. 18 hectares of our own woodland provide space for walks, peaceful mornings or a final stroll before dinner.
After a walk through vineyards and woods, this creates a pleasant transition between activity and relaxation. Nature, fine dining and tranquillity intertwine – without any major change of scene.

Practical tips for a hiking holiday in the Rheingau
1. The best time to visit
Spring and autumn are particularly charming. Whilst nature awakens in spring and the vineyards show their first signs of green, the grape harvest shapes the atmosphere of the region in autumn.
2. The right kit
Good walking boots are sufficient for many trails. On longer sections of the Rheinsteig or in the Wispertal valley, it is advisable to also bring weatherproof clothing and plenty of water.
3. Planning and navigation
Regional walking maps and apps such as Komoot are useful for planning your walks. Many trails are very well signposted.
4. Easily accessible
The Rheingau is only about an hour’s drive from Frankfurt and can also be reached quickly from Mainz and Wiesbaden.
Hiking holidays in the Rheingau – exploring nature and culture
Perhaps that is precisely the Rheingau’s greatest strength: the region doesn’t require you to choose between activity and relaxation, between nature and culture, or between exercise and enjoyment.
Everything is close at hand. The trails wind through vineyards and woods, past historic sites and to views that will stay with you for a long time.
And that’s precisely why a walking holiday in the Rheingau often feels less like a trip – and more like a short break with a surprisingly big impact
